About Toto

The group Toto was formed in the year 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (who were also highly acclaimed studio musicians working with Boz Scaggs at the time) and bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. Their name is derived from the Latin word that means "all all-encompassing," the group was determined to explore all styles of music.

In 1981, Toto's third album Turn Back is a failure However, they resurface with their fourth release Isolation that features two hits, including the title track and Roseanna. The album and the tour helped them become a household name all over the world.

After a gap of couple of years, Toto return with the album Fahrenheit in 1986. The album is a departure from the ballads of previous albums, and also features some heavy rock. It was their first platinum album in North America.

When they record the band's fifth album the band loses their manager and is faced with financial difficulties. They decide to record a brand new album and change their name with a different producer. The lead singer Fergie Frederiksen departs and is replaced by Joseph Williams, son of legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph is an easier frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a much-needed boost.

In 1999, the band releases Mindfields and embarks on an extensive tour across the globe. After a few months in Europe they head to Japan where the shows are sold out. After a short break, Toto resumes recording and begins recording their first live album titled Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes the cover of Weezer's track Hash Pipe in response to the band performing their hit song Africa on a recent tour. Toto's touring group is comprised by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.

It was the first time in more than 31 years that all of Toto's founding members were on stage together. In addition to the original members keyboardist Greg Tambu filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate filled in for Shem Von Schroeck.

Toto has remained one of the most adored rock groups for more than three decades, releasing huge hits like "Rosanna," "Hold The Line," and their 8X-platinum hit, "Africa." The group's anthemic arena-rock is heavily influenced by a variety styles, including progressive rock, world rhythms, soul, and jazz.

Despite their popularity, the band faced several difficulties in their later years. In 2002, drummer Greg Phillinganes left the group, and keyboardist David Paich took a leave of absence due to health reasons. Shem von Schröeck took over, but the band wasn't the same without Paich or Phillinganes. In 2008, Toto decided to take a break from touring after a string lineup changes and a disappointing series of releases. The group returned to touring in 2012 with the release of their album, 40 Trips Around the Sun.

The album was a return to form for the band, and the tour accompanied by sold-out shows in North America and Europe. Toto's reunion gained momentum with the return of bassist Shem Von Schroeck and guitarist Steve Lukather.
