Before Toto was formed The members of the band performed session work for other musicians. David Paich, the son of drummer Marty Paich, and Jeff Porcaro (the brother of guitarist Joe Porcaro and drummer Jeff Porcaro) all performed on Boz Scaggs’ 1975 album Silk Degrees. The group's collaboration led to formation of Toto in 1976.

Turn Back, Toto's third studio album, was criticized by critics due to the absence of hit singles. In 1985 the group's lead singer Fergie Fredericksen left The band held auditions to find a new frontman. The band picked guitarist Steve Lukather, and recorded Fahrenheit in the year 1986.
